New Philadelphia, OH (November 8, 2024) – Buckeye Career Center (BCC), in partnership with Dover City Schools, is excited to announce the relocation of its Exercise Science & Sports Medicine program to Dover High School (DHS) for the 2025-26 school year. This move is designed to enhance the hands-on learning experience for all students by offering direct engagement with student-athletes at Dover High School while also providing collaboration opportunities with area healthcare providers in athletic training, injury rehabilitation, and injury prevention.
By working alongside DHS’s student-athletes, BCC students will apply their lab skills in real-world settings, gaining practical experience that will help them succeed in careers related to fitness, sports medicine, and healthcare. The program is instructed by BCC’s Mr. Jamey Harlan. Students will remain active in BCC’s chapter of HOSA Future Health Professionals.
The program will be open to junior and senior students from all BCC partner schools, as well as Dover High School students who enroll at BCC. Students will continue to take their academic courses at BCC, their home school, or through College Credit Plus, depending on their needs. Transportation will be provided from BCC to DHS and back, ensuring easy access to the program. For those who drive, parking will be available at Dover High School and Buckeye Career Center.
“The proximity to Dover High School provides students with access to a valuable network of healthcare providers in the region, opening up potential internships and career connections in athletic training and rehabilitation services,” said Bob Alsept, BCC Superintendent. “We believe this collaboration will strengthen our Exercise Science program, enhance our work-based learning opportunities, and provide our students with hands-on experience in a real-world environment.”
“We’re proud to partner with Buckeye Career Center and host the BCC Exercise Science program at Dover High School,” said Dover Superintendent Karie McCrate. “This program offers Dover students and those from other area schools with hands-on learning pathways and potential work-based experiences with local medical provider partners. This innovative partnership strengthens our commitment to meeting local workforce needs and providing students with high-quality academic experiences and cutting-edge career pathways.”
All students in the program will be enrolled as BCC students while maintaining their status as students at their respective home school. They will also be eligible to earn industry-recognized credentials to prepare them for the workforce.
Currently, the Exercise Science program includes 23 students. Applications for next school year for Exercise Science and BCC’s 33 other programs will be accepted beginning at 5:30pm on November 14, 2024.
